Hairspray Takes Dallas by Bouffant!!!

“Hairspray” opened in Dallas at the Winspear Opera House Saturday night, July 7, and it was fabulous!!

A production of The Dallas Theater Center, this wonderful musical was exuberant, brilliant, happy, colorful, well-danced and sung, and carried the audience into the stratosphere with joy and delight.

The story of Tracy Turnbladt, a somewhat tubby teen, who dances her way into our hearts and onto the stage of the TV show hosted by Corny Collins, covers all the bases:  teenage angst and hope, parents both supportive and manipulative, friends who band together, and enemies who seek to subvert!

Additionally, the underlying theme of segregation and the teens’ fight to bring integration to the forefront of their TV show rings true to the very emotional time of the 1960s when it was playing out on the national stage, as well.

You’ll love it, you’ll sing, and you’ll leave wanting to dance again, and remembering all those ideals you thought had disappeared.  “Hairspray” will make you want to be a better person simply through reminding you that the work is not done, and we can still dance to a great tune!!

HAIRSPRAY is directed by Dallas Theater Center’s Associate Artistic Director, Joel Ferrell (Frankenstein, Dreamgirls, Cabaret, The Rocky Horror Show).

The Broadway musical HAIRSPRAY is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, orchestrations by Harold Wheeler and
arrangements by March Shaiman. Book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman. This production will be directed by Joel Ferrell with music direction by Vonda K. Bowling.

The 2007 movie musical adaptation of HAIRSPRAY is the 10th highest grossing movie musical of all time.

The 2016 live television special HAIRSPRAY LIVE! was watched by more than 9 million viewers and was nominated for seven primetime EMMY Awards.
