Their mission is to enable and empower these individuals to realize their full potential by providing training for various assistive technologies and software programs. This includes assistive technology evaluations and training, employment skills, and vocational training, with classes covering Microsoft Office Suite, advanced voiceover software, JAWS screen reading software, and more.
The Lighthouse's commitment to creating an inclusive environment extends beyond its own services, promoting the importance of accessible technology in everyday life. For Apple device users, enhanced usability is just a few taps away in the "Settings" under "Accessibility," where features like VoiceOver, Zoom, and Magnifier are available to meet different accessibility needs. Android users also have access to a suite of features designed to improve device navigation and usability. Within the "Settings" under "Accessibility," options such as TalkBack and text-to-speech output are available to make devices more user-friendly.
"Without assistive technology, I would not be able to communicate with others via my phone," said Steven Johnson, Assistive Technology Trainer at The Lighthouse of Houston. "I would have to pay people to read printed materials for me, I would not be able to secure my own ride without sighted assistance, I would not be gainfully employed in a meaningful job, and so much more."
