Empowering the Blind Community: The Lighthouse of Houston’s New Podcast

In an exciting development for the visually impaired community, The Lighthouse of Houston has launched its groundbreaking podcast, “Sightless Voices: Unleashing Potential.” This initiative highlights the real-life experiences and stories of individuals living with blindness or low vision. After just one day, the podcast reached the top ten in the nonprofit category on chartable.com.
The podcast, available in audio and accessible YouTube formats, is set to challenge common misconceptions about blindness and low vision. Jennifer Parrish, Manager of Business Services and podcast host, emphasizes the importance of representation. “We want to tell stories about people who have benefited from the Lighthouse, people who work here, and show that we don’t sit at home feeling sorry for ourselves,” says Jennifer. “Our blindness doesn’t define us.”
This sentiment aligns perfectly with the Lighthouse’s mission to empower and enable individuals who are blind or low vision to realize their full potential.
Jenna Dhayer, President of The Lighthouse of Houston, shares the organization’s ambitious vision: to “create a life without limits for people who are blind or low vision.” The Lighthouse of Houston leads by example, with an impressive 60% of their workforce consisting of individuals who are blind or have low vision.
“We’re striving to create a people-centric culture and challenge ourselves to ensure everything we’re doing is accessible and equitable,” says Jenna.
“Sightless Voices: Unleashing Potential” is now available on all major podcast platforms and offers listeners a unique opportunity to gain insights into the lives, challenges, and triumphs of individuals who are blind or low vision.
